Long Multiplication

Double-digit (or long) multiplication is a multi-step process. Students must multiply by the ones, place a zero placeholder, multiply by the tens, and then add the partial products.

Teaching Tip: The most common mistake is forgetting the zero placeholder on the second line!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is 'Vertical' layout checked?
Long multiplication is almost impossible to solve horizontally. The vertical stacking is necessary to align the partial products.
Can I increase the difficulty?
Yes. Try changing the 'Number Range' max value to 999 to introduce 3-digit multiplication problems.
What if my student is struggling?
Go back to our '2-Digit x 1-Digit' page. Mastering that first is a prerequisite for long multiplication.
